LEGAL PRACTICE AREAS

Legal Dictation Software by Practice Area

Every practice dictates different documents with different vocabulary. These pages cover what lawyers in each area dictate, the terms the Legal Edition knows, and how the text gets into their tools. Speech is recognized on your own Mac or Windows PC.

Last updated 21 October 2026.

The basics are the same in every practice: press your hotkey, dictate, press it again, and VoicePrivate recognizes the audio on your computer and pastes the text where your cursor is. What changes is the work. A personal injury lawyer is summarizing medical records. An immigration lawyer is writing declarations and answering RFEs. A family lawyer is drafting parenting plans that a judge will read.

Practice areas

Personal injury and medical malpractice

Demand letters, medical chronologies, deposition summaries, malpractice case memos.

Family law and divorce

Parenting plans, petitions and motions, settlement agreements, client letters.

Criminal defense

Motions to suppress, client memos after jail visits, discovery review notes.

Immigration

Client declarations, RFE and NOID responses, cover letters and exhibit lists.

Estate planning, probate and elder law

Design meeting memos, plan summary letters, probate filings, guardianship petitions.

How the areas are split

A page covers one set of documents and one vocabulary. Where two practice names describe the same work, they share a page. Divorce is family law. Medical malpractice is personal injury with a standard of care analysis, so it sits on the personal injury page. Elder law shares estate planning's documents (powers of attorney, trusts, guardianship), so it sits with estate planning and probate.

What every practice gets

FeatureWhat it does
Legal dictionary12,000+ legal terms, with the near misses each one corrects
Personal DictionaryYour clients, parties, judges and places, spelled your way
Legal templatesClient Intake and Deposition Summary, dictated section by section
Legal shortcuts5 to start: motion caption, deposition header, notice of appearance, billing entry, matter date note
Audio filesTranscribes MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC, OGG and AAC recordings on your computer
Paste at cursorWord, Outlook, and text fields in Clio, MyCase and other browser based systems

VoicePrivate does not connect to Clio, MyCase or any other account. It types into the field you are in, which is why it works with all of them.

Example: setting up the Legal Edition for your practice

  1. Add the 20 or so names you will say most this month to your Personal Dictionary: clients, opposing counsel, judges, providers or officers.
  2. Give the motion caption, notice of appearance and billing entry shortcuts spoken names, so "insert caption" puts in the 5 lines of a caption with blanks to fill.
  3. Dictate your next 3 real documents straight into Word or your case management system, and note any term that needed fixing.
  4. Add those terms to the Personal Dictionary. By the end of the 30-day guarantee window you know whether it fits your practice.

Confidentiality

Recognition runs on the lawyer's own computer. The audio is not sent to a server for transcription and there is no cloud transmission of what you dictate. How your firm stores and reviews documents afterwards does not change.
