HEMATOLOGY

Hematology dictation software for consults, anemia and thrombosis notes

VoicePrivate Healthcare Edition transcribes hematology dictation on your own computer, with a Hematology setting that expects ferritin, schistocytes, factor V Leiden, anticoagulants and the marrow disorders in your notes.

Hematology consults start with a number that is out of range. An anemia referral needs the hemoglobin, ferritin, transferrin saturation and reticulocyte count before the iron plan makes sense. A low platelet count needs the smear, looking for schistocytes, and a decision about immune thrombocytopenia. A clot needs the history, the thrombophilia question and an anticoagulant with a dose and a duration. Marrow disorders bring a bone marrow biopsy and terms such as myelodysplastic syndrome and myeloma. Each note is a short argument built on lab values and drug names.

Hematology words general dictation gets wrong

General dictation software is trained on everyday speech, so hematology terms come out as near misses. Each row below is a misheard form listed in the VoicePrivate Healthcare dictionary and the term it is corrected to:

Misheard asVoicePrivate writes
thrombocytopenathrombocytopenia
nuetropenianeutropenia
rituximibrituximab
aplastick anemiaaplastic anemia
skistocytesschistocytes

inoxepirinenoxaparin
myelodisplastic syndromemyelodysplastic syndrome
multiple myelohmamultiple myeloma
Philadelphia chromasomePhiladelphia chromosome
flow cytometreeflow cytometry

Drug names get extra care. A misheard word that sounds like a drug in the dictionary is matched to it, but a real drug name is never changed into another drug, so apixaban stays apixaban and rivaroxaban stays rivaroxaban.

What choosing Hematology changes

In the Mac app, Settings has a Medical specialty picker with 32 specialties plus General. Choosing Hematology does two things on your computer:

  • It gives recognition the 24 Hematology core terms to expect: thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, ferritin, transferrin, ferric carboxymaltose, iron sucrose, schistocytes, reticulocyte, haptoglobin, immune thrombocytopenia, eltrombopag, romiplostim, factor V Leiden, prothrombin, thrombophilia, deep vein thrombosis, rivaroxaban, apixaban, enoxaparin, sickle cell disease, hemoglobin electrophoresis, bone marrow biopsy, myelodysplastic syndrome, myeloma.
  • A long misheard word that is a near miss of one of those core terms is matched to it instead of a general word.

The Healthcare dictionary tags 1,197 terms to Hematology, counted October 2026, and all 74,000+ medical terms stay available whichever specialty you choose. On Windows there is no specialty picker: the full medical dictionary and its corrections apply to every note.

Hematology notes by type

Anemia consults

Iron deficiency anemia with ferritin, transferrin and reticulocyte count, oral iron versus iron sucrose or ferric carboxymaltose, and hemoglobin electrophoresis for a suspected hemoglobinopathy.

Low counts

Thrombocytopenia and neutropenia workups, peripheral smear findings such as schistocytes, haptoglobin, and immune thrombocytopenia treated with eltrombopag or romiplostim.

Thrombosis and anticoagulation

Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism follow up, factor V Leiden and prothrombin gene testing, thrombophilia counselling, and apixaban, rivaroxaban or enoxaparin with duration.

Benign hematology clinic

Sickle cell disease visits, polycythemia, leukocytosis and thrombocytosis referrals, and transfusion plans.

Marrow and malignant hematology

Bone marrow biopsy procedure notes, myelodysplastic syndrome, myeloma, lymphoma and leukemia follow up with flow cytometry results.

Example: dictating a thrombocytopenia consult

Here is the visit dictated one section at a time. Every bold term is in the VoicePrivate medical dictionary.

  1. In the HPI box, press Command+Shift+Space and say: "Thirty eight year old referred for thrombocytopenia, platelets 42,000, easy bruising, no bleeding. No new medications." Press the hotkey again.
  2. In the data section, press Command+Shift+Space and say: "Smear reviewed, no schistocytes, platelets large. Haptoglobin normal, reticulocyte count normal. Ferritin 18." Press the hotkey again.
  3. In the assessment, press Command+Shift+Space and say: "Most consistent with immune thrombocytopenia. Coexisting iron deficiency anemia." Press the hotkey again.
  4. In the plan, press Command+Shift+Space and say: "Observation for now given no bleeding. Iron sucrose 200 milligrams times 5. If platelets fall below 30,000, discuss eltrombopag or romiplostim. Repeat CBC in 2 weeks." Press the hotkey again.

Each time you press the hotkey to stop, VoicePrivate transcribes on your computer and pastes the finished text at your cursor. Text does not appear while you are still speaking. It arrives in one block when you stop, so read the values and doses once and sign.

Getting the text into your EHR

VoicePrivate works with any EHR that accepts a paste, because it pastes through the clipboard rather than through a plug in. That includes Epic, Oracle Health (Cerner), athenahealth, eClinicalWorks and NextGen. The workflow is the same everywhere:

  1. Click into the note field, such as the HPI, assessment or plan box.
  2. Press Command+Shift+Space on Mac or Ctrl+Shift+Space on Windows and dictate.
  3. Press the hotkey again. The text is pasted where your cursor is, and with Auto-copy to clipboard off, the default, your previous clipboard contents are put back.

If your EHR runs inside Citrix or another remote desktop, the remote session must allow clipboard redirection from your computer. Most IT teams can turn this on per user. VoicePrivate runs on the local Mac or PC, not inside the remote session. The EHR dictation guide covers each system.

Privacy, stated as facts

VoicePrivate processes speech on the computer it is installed on. Audio never leaves the computer and nothing is sent to a cloud service for transcription. Your notes live in your EHR, the same as if you had typed them. Your practice still decides how the EHR itself is secured and what agreements it has with vendors. With Auto-save transcriptions on, which is the default, each dictation is also kept in the app's Library on that computer. Turn it off in Settings if you do not want a Library copy. Auto-copy to clipboard is off by default; if you turn it on, the text also stays on the clipboard after it is pasted, so leave it off if the EHR should hold the only copy.

Hematology dictation questions

Does VoicePrivate know hematology terms?

Yes. The Healthcare dictionary tags 1,197 terms to Hematology, and the Hematology core list includes ferritin, schistocytes, haptoglobin, factor V Leiden, thrombophilia, rivaroxaban, apixaban, enoxaparin and myelodysplastic syndrome. On Mac, choosing Hematology in Settings favours those core terms.

Will it change one anticoagulant into another?

No. A misheard word that sounds like a drug is matched to the drug, but a real drug name is never replaced with a different drug. Read the drug and dose once before you sign.

Is there a hematology setting on Windows?

The specialty picker is in the Mac app. On Windows, the full 74,000+ term medical dictionary applies to every note, including the hematology terms.

Does text appear while I am talking?

No. Press the hotkey to start, press it again to stop, and VoicePrivate pastes the finished text at your cursor a moment later.

Is there a free trial?

No. Individual monthly and annual plans are charged at checkout and include a 30-day money-back guarantee on the first payment. Team plans and renewals are not covered.

Hematology connects to oncology dictation for malignant hematology, pathology dictation for marrow and smear reads, vascular surgery dictation for venous thrombosis and nephrology dictation for the anemia of kidney disease.
