Nuance sells Dragon to your industry directly. Its insurance page says: "Field agents and adjusters can spend as much as 50 percent of their day typing reports and completing other paperwork." It offers two Dragon products for the job.

The honest comparison with the desktop version
If you work only on Windows and you are happy to buy a desktop licence and pay for upgrades, Dragon Professional v16 costs about what three and a half years of Insurance Edition cost. - More than 7,000 insurance terms, built in. Subrogation, indemnity, actual cash value and reservation of rights arrive spelled right, and you can add your own words on top.
- Insurance text shortcuts. Type /claim for a claim report heading with today's date, or use /adj, /denial and /datenote. Blanks such as the claim number go in for you to fill. Give a shortcut a spoken name, such as "adjuster notes", and say "insert adjuster notes" while you dictate.

- It types into any application. Your claims system, your agency management system, Outlook, Word, a browser form. There is no plugin to install and nothing for IT to connect.

- Transcribe a recording. Import an audio file, such as a voice memo you recorded on your phone at the site, and it is transcribed on your computer.
- A vocabulary set for each claim or account. Put the insured's name, the contractors and the policy terms in one set and switch it on while you work the file.
- Terms from your own documents. Point it at policies, estimates and PDFs, scanned pages included, and it finds the names, acronyms and unusual words to add. The reading happens on your computer.
- Voice commands you make yourself. Pick a phrase such as "sign off" and choose what it does: insert your closing, press Tab or Return, wait a moment, or insert a text shortcut, in that order.
- Corrections by voice. Say "scratch that" to remove your last dictation, and "spell" with the letters for a name.
- It learns your corrections. Fix a word with Edit & teach and click Apply & Learn. A word you have corrected three times joins your Personal Dictionary.
- Bring your Dragon word list. One Import button reads a Dragon word list (text or XML), a plain list, a CSV, an Excel workbook or a VoicePrivate export. You review every term before it is added.
- An audit log. Each transcription is recorded in a chained log, so edits to past entries are detectable.
