Windows Voice Typing Not Working? How to Fix Win+H

Windows voice typing usually stops for one of a few reasons: no internet connection, a blocked or wrong microphone, a speech setting turned off, or an unsupported language. Work through these checks in order.

The short answer

Click into a text field, check you are online, check that apps can use the microphone and that the right input device is selected, then press Win+H again. If you need voice typing that does not depend on a connection, use Windows 11 voice access or an on-device dictation app such as VoicePrivate.

Worked example: the 5-minute check, in order

  1. Click into a blank Notepad window so a text field has focus, then press Win+H. The voice typing bar should appear within 2 seconds.
  2. Open a web page to confirm the PC is online. Voice typing sends audio to Microsoft, so with 0 network connections it cannot work.
  3. Open Settings, Privacy and security, Microphone on Windows 11 (Settings, Privacy, Microphone on Windows 10), and make sure microphone access and app access to the microphone are both on.
  4. Open Settings, System, Sound, choose your microphone as the input device, and speak for 5 seconds while watching the input level move.
  5. Open Settings, Privacy and security, Speech on Windows 11 (Settings, Privacy, Speech on Windows 10). If your version shows an Online speech recognition switch, turn it on, then try Win+H again.

Other common causes

  • Language. Voice typing supports a set list of languages. If your Windows display or input language is not on it, the bar may not start. Add a supported language under Settings, Time and language.
  • The wrong microphone. Webcams and docks add microphones of their own, and Windows sometimes switches to them. Pick the microphone by name in Sound settings.
  • Bluetooth headsets. Many switch to a low quality voice mode when the microphone is on, which can hurt accuracy. A wired USB headset is more reliable; see best microphone for dictation.
  • Work PCs. Company policies can turn off online speech services or the microphone. Ask IT whether voice typing is allowed on your device.
  • After an update. Restart the PC once. If voice typing still fails, check Windows Update for a follow-up fix.

Windows voice typing problems: frequently asked questions

Why does Win+H do nothing?

Usually the cursor is not in a text field, the keyboard shortcut is blocked by another app, or voice typing is not available in your Windows language. Click into a text box first, then press the Windows key and H together.

Why does voice typing say it cannot connect?

Windows voice typing sends audio to Microsoft's Azure Speech services, so it needs a working internet connection. On a dropped or restricted network it stops. Windows 11 voice access and VoicePrivate recognize speech on the device instead.

Voice typing opens but types nothing. What should I check?

Check that apps can use the microphone under Settings, Privacy and security, Microphone on Windows 11 (Settings, Privacy, Microphone on Windows 10), and that the right input device is chosen under Settings, System, Sound. Speak for a few seconds and watch the input level move.

Is there voice typing that works offline on Windows?

Windows 11 voice access, on version 22H2 or later, recognizes speech on the device once its language files have downloaded. VoicePrivate for Windows also recognizes speech on the PC and pastes the text into any app.

Bottom line

Most Win+H failures come down to the connection, microphone permission, the input device or the language. If you want dictation that keeps working offline and keeps audio on the PC, VoicePrivate General is $9.99 a month or $84 a year, with a 30-day money-back guarantee on individual plans.
